DIY taster days
Women in North Devon are turning down their everyday routines in favour of something a little more challenging. Armed with saws, hammers and screwdrivers they're preparing to take the construction industry by storm.

It's not a stereotypically female industry but these women are proving they can do the job just as well as the men ... as long as they're given the chance. At a free taster course at North Devon College they're dabbling in bricklaying, carpentry, electrical installations and plumbing.
"Well I've not done anything like this in my life before, so i thought i'd give it a go. I came yesterday for two subjects. This is my third and im having a great time."
"I've got two children that have grown up and left school now. So I thought it would be a good chance to get into the construction world for me."
Only one per cent of workers in construction are female, but the Government wants to change that by encouraging free sessions like these. Course leaders say women are often put off careers in the industry, but they can actually offer lots of benefits.
EDWINA STEVENSON - North Devon College: "They can have flexible working in the industry if they chose to go self emplyed. A lot of single parents and the elderly would prefer to have a woman come into their hope to do the repairs general maintenance."
And after seeing the determined looks on these women's faces, it looks like they'll be outdoing the men in no time time.
