ONE TOUGH SAILORMAN

On December 7, 1941, when the Japanese made their infamous surprise attack at Pearl Harbor, a black cook, took over a machine gun aboard the USS West Virginia and became one of the first heroes of World War II. This sailor dragged the ship's commanding officer, Capt. Bennion out of the line of fire, and then manned the ship's machine gun firing at attacking Japanese aircraft until ordered to leave the bridge.

This African American received the Navy Cross on May 27, 1942 for his extraordinary courage in battle.

Commissioned on June 30, 1973, USS Miller (FF-1091), a Knox-class frigate, was named in honor of Doris Miller.

On October 11, 1991, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority dedicated a bronze commemorative plaque of Miller at the Miller Family Park located on the U.S. Naval Base, Pearl Harbor.
