For many baby boomers, facing retirement age can be daunting especially with the prospect of idle years and being made to feel worthless. However, there is one good option open for them, and that is joining the Peace Corps.

Joining the Peace Corps can be a worthwhile activity for older people, whom the organization itself is actively pursuing: the Peace Corps is on a tear to attract volunteers 50 and older, hoping to tap their skills and place them around the world, according to an article by the Next Avenue.

“The Peace Corps has always been open to volunteers of all ages, but we’ve made a much more purposeful effort to recruit older volunteers,” said Hessler-Radelet, the fourth in her family to volunteer for the Peace Corps (at 24, she taught English in Western Samoa).

A look at the website of Peace Corps will indeed show it has been encouraging since way back more older Americans to volunteer as they have the skills and experiences needed by "developing nations need in computer technology, forestry, agriculture and the environment." Read More...

A more recent article, posted by Marketplace, also says that according to the U.S. Peace Corps, 7 percent of its 6,818 volunteers are over the age of 50, and the international service organization would like to see that double. Retired volunteers, the agency says, bring unique life skills and professional experiences with them that allow them to instantly impact the communities they serve around the world. Read More...

In addition to enhancing their lives with meaning and sense of purpose, volunteering in the Peace Corps even for a minimum of two years , can lead to a new career or job for baby boomers, as this idea from a Wall Street Journal suggests: "we should create a Legacy Corps: one that recruits millions of older people to be extra “grandparents” for young people in early-learning programs and mentors for children growing up facing tough odds. In essence, it could be a new kind of Peace Corps for the generation that the Peace Corps was designed for in the first place." Read More...
