For the first time ever, two women soldiers are making history as they set to graduate Friday from the "exhausting" Army Ranger School, CNN Politics reports in its article, quoting a statement from the women's families.

Capt. Kristen Griest and 1st Lt. Shaye Haver are the first female soldiers to graduate from the school for the special operations unit, the article says, and they are among the 96 soldiers who have finished the grueling 62-day course that included learning "how to operate in the woods, mountains and swamplands."

The students were also required to undergo a "physical fitness test that included 49 pushups, 59 situps, a 5-mile run in 40 minutes, six chin-ups, a swim test, a land navigation test, a 12-mile foot march in three hours, several obstacle courses, four days of military mountaineering, three parachute jumps, four air assaults on helicopters and 27 days of mock combat patrols."

The Army Ranger School is described by Pentagon as "the Army's premier combat leadership course, teaching Ranger students how to overcome fatigue, hunger, and stress to lead Soldiers during small unit combat operations."

WSJ also reported that the elite leadership course that pushes physical and mental limits was opened to women for the first time this year. Nineteen women began the course in April, with two successfully completing, allowing them to wear the prestigious black and gold Ranger tab on their uniforms. Among male soldiers, 381 started the course and 94 successfully completed it. - click here

People are hoping this achievement of Capt. Kristen Griest and 1st Lt. Shaye Haver will lead to an increase of "women's interest in certain military positions" as well as "increase society's acceptance of women in military roles traditionally held by men," according to Council on Foreign Relations senior fellow Gayle Tzemach Lemmon.
