President Obama has earmarked $118 million worth of funds for the benefit of minority girls and women, Yahoo News reported. This pledge will fund economic and research programs that aim to provide girls and women of color with equal opportunities for prosperity and help them overcome structural barriers.

According to the news report by Yahoo, the earmarked funding, a five-year initiative called Prosperity Together, is the administration's solution to counter opportunity gaps and structural barriers faced by mnority girls and women. $100 million will be devoted to low-income women, and an additional $18 million from a collection of research institutions called the Collaborative to Advance Equity through Research to continue studying the living conditions of women and girls of color.

The funding initiative was announced during Friday's forum called “Advancing Equity for Women and Girls of Color,” held at the Wake Forest University.

A report by the Council on Women and Girls, was also released during the Summit, and cites the different opportunity gaps girls and women face in the United States, such as low participation in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) fields.

Here is an excerpt from that report:
The Council on Women and Girls has identified five data-driven issue areas where interventions can promote opportunities for success at school, work, and in the community. Continuing research in these areas and exploration of new efforts can help advance equality for women and girls of color.

Among the issue areas, and the initial steps the Council is taking to address these, are the following:

#1: FOSTERING SCHOOL SUCCESS AND REDUCING UNNECESSARY EXCLUSIONARY SCHOOL DISCIPLINE
Supporting school discipline practices that promote safe, inclusive and positive learning environments.
Enhancing public awareness about exclusionary school discipline, including how it disproportionately affects girls of color.
#2: MEETING THE NEEDS OF VULNERABLE AND STRIVING YOUTH
Enhancing programmatic responses by integrating evidence-based trauma-informed and trauma-sensitive perspectives into youth serving systems and organizations.
Expanding disaggregated data initiatives.
