This year's Women History Month, a month-long celebration of women and their great contributions to national progress, a tradition started in 1981 – as a week-long event – honors women in public service and government, as it says so in the theme: "Working to Form a More Perfect Union: Honoring Women in Public Service and Government."

A rich diversity of background, life and work experiences marks the 2016 Women History Month honorees, all 16 of them, who “collectively (they) have dramatically influenced our public policy and the building of viable institutions and organizations. From championing basic human rights to ensuring access and equal opportunity for all Americans, they have led the way in establishing a stronger and more democratic country.”

As Pres. Obama said in his proclamation of this year's celebration, “We have come far, but there is still far to go in shattering the glass ceiling that holds women back” - and so he urges each and every American to “uphold the responsibility that falls on all of us -- regardless of gender -- and fight for equal opportunity for our daughters as well as our sons.” (WhiteHouse.gov)

Pres. Obama also announced in his proclamation that the White House will be hosting, in May, a summit on "The United State of Women," in order to “highlight the advances we have made in the United States and across the globe and to expand our efforts on helping women confront the challenges they face and reach for their highest aspirations.”

Among the great women to be honored on March 19th are the following:
1. Sister Mary Madonna Ashton, CSJ, (1923-Present), Public Health Leader and Minnesota Commissioner of Health
2. Daisy Bates, (1912-1999), Civil Rights Organizer, Leader of the Little Rock School Integration
3. Sonia Pressman Fuentes, (1928 – Present), NOW co-founder, first woman attorney in the Office of the General Counsel at the EEOC
4. Isabel Gonzalez, (1882-1971), Champion of Puerto Ricans securing American Citizenship
5. Ella Grasso, (1919-1981), Governor of Connecticut, First Woman Governor of any US State Elected in Her Own Right
6. Suzan Shown Harjo, (1945 – Present), Native American Public Policy Advocate and Journalist
7. Judy Hart, (1941- Present), National Park Founding Superintendent of Rosie the Riveter World War II Home Front National Historical Park and Women’s Rights National Historical Park
8. Oveta Culp Hobby, (1905-1995), WWII Director of the Women’s Army Auxiliary Corps and
first Secretary of the US Department of Health, Education, and Welfare

The stories of these great women, trailblazers in their own capacity, are awe-inspiring and heartwarming. It is hoped that through the examples of their lives and works, more paths of opportunities be opened to girls and women of this present generation onwards, as they dare blaze their own trails in public service as well in government.
